Home at last from a productive, interesting and surprisingly fun high school journalism conference, I find myself back at the desk of The Warrior Report. Imagine that.
During the past two weeks, I met about 150 high school students from all over the United States that were interested in various forms of communications- chiefly journalism. Most of the future ESPN anchors and Washington Post reporters I met all had something in common: They were really smart.
I also found that although they were from all over the country, we were all similar. We love high school sports, and I found myself extremely jealous of high schools with very good sports teams. One girl’s high school football team won the Texas Class AAAA State Championship, which is about as cool as having your favorite teams win the Super Bowl and World Series and having a high school buddy win the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating contest. Very cool.
As I learned about the AP style and using active voice in stories, all of the students in my class of 25 actually knew what the teacher was talking about. It’s rare to find another 16-year-old in Binghamton (not to mention Chenango Valley) that knows anything about the media. Hopefully I am the rarity.
From these discoveries and new suggestions from my professor, I think a change in the Warrior Report is needed. Now that I have the ability to write stories much faster and have a finished product without grammar errors, look for more from The Warrior Report.
I will establish more concrete stories, have a bigger staff and hopefully increase readership of The Warrior Report.
Look for the next two years to be the “golden age” of Chenango Valley news.
