Lights out for CV.

Norwich Purple Tornado: 80
Chenango Valley Warriors: 71

For some reason, the lights over the crowd in the Chenango Valley high school gym were off Friday night, and for some reason, CV blew a 17 point lead. The Chenango Valley Warriors varsity boys’ basketball team lost to the Norwich Purple Tornado 80-71 Friday night at Chenango Valley High School. The Warriors looked great in the first three quarters of the game. Tommy Hull and Matt Bobal were getting rebounds, and CV was able to set up scores early on against a team that one Owego varsity onlooker described as “slow.” At the half, the Warriors led by 3 and thanks to Chris Mack (4) and Matt Mullins (5) hitting threes all over the place, the Warriors extended their lead 61-44 and looked like they were cruising to a victory. However, the fourth quarter was a mess for Chenango Valley. Norwich starts the full court press – Chenango Valley has a tough time inbounding the ball, Norwich hits 5 threes in the fourth quarter – Chenango Valley didn’t make a field goal, Norwich tries to speed up play – Chenango Valley just slows down. The main problem for the Warriors was turnovers – 12 in the game, most on bad passes and tips off fingers in the paint. On a night where Mack scores 20 and Mullins scores 18, three pointers are an ease, and a 17 point lead in the fourth is not enough to win it, it was just not Chenango Valley basketball. Maybe it was the weird lighting situation, the substitute scoreboard operator, the lack of shoot-around during JV at halftime, or the lack of fan support that killed the Warriors. This may have been a learning situation for Chenango Valley, who faces Oneonta in the STOP DWI Tournament next Friday. Let’s hope they’ve learned.
